There are approximately 180 species within the genus of Aster. The word Aster comes from an ancient greek word astron meaning "star". Which is what the flower head commonly looks like. Aster flowers are beautiful and colorful flowers that make a great addition to gardens. Asters can grow in all types of hardiness zones and found mostly in North America, but can also be found in Europe and Asia. In England there are actually only two native members of the Aster genus Goldilocks and Aster tripolium, and in North America there is only one native species and that is Aster alpinus. Asters generally bloom in late summer and fall. Birds, bees and butterflies like Asters because they are colorful and fragrant. The different varieties of the plant range in growing height from 8 inches to 8 feet. The Aster flower also makes a nice addition to vases and arrangements due to pleasing variety of colors.

Flower care: Seeds can be directly seeded into your garden, although planting the seeds in pots indoors then transplanting the seedlings outdoors in early spring after the last frost may bring better results. The flower does likes a well drained soil and full sunlight. When sowing the seeds cover them lightly with soil and water thoroughly once. Asters germinate in 15 to 30 days. Plant Asters 18 inches apart from each other. Clumps that have matured should be devided every 3 - 4 years in late fall after the flowering has finished or in early spring. To create a bushier plant and to prolong the fall bloom pinch back the tops by 6-8 inches during the summer prior to mid July. The taller varieties should be staked. Asters need regular watering but do not over water in the winter. It is a good idea to add a 2 inch layer of mulch around the plants in the spring time. After 2 or 3 years in the spring divide the plant for best results for flower quality.

The Aster Opus is lavender and white. (see photo above) The flowers are approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter. The plant stands about 30 inches in height. It looks wonderful and will enhance your garden. The Aster Opus is an annual.
